MARIA PANEZI

Maria Panezi is an Associate Professor at UNB Law. She is the Academic Director of the UNB Law Trade Law and Carbon Pricing Lab and a founding member of the UNB International Law Group. She received her LLB at the University of Athens in 2005 and her LLM at NYU Law in 2006; she was admitted to the Athens Bar in 2007. She obtained her PhD from Osgoode Hall Law School. Prof. Panezi’s research focuses on the interaction between national strategies on climate change and World Trade Organization (WTO) law. Her teaching interests include International Trade Law, Public International Law and Contracts and Globalization and the Law. She has published extensively on strategies for trade governance as a strategic tool to address CO2 emissions. Among her many publications, her co-authored article, “How trade policy can support the climate agenda” was published in Science in 2022. She also supervised and co-authored with student Trade Law and Carbon Pricing Lab members a report funded by the Government of New Brunswick Environmental Trust Fund on Supporting New Brunswick’s Green Economy Transition and the Trade-related aspects of the NB Climate Change Act and Output-Based Pricing System (OBPS). She has made several media appearances (most notable, CBC, NPR, the Globe and Mail and the Washington Post) discussing carbon mitigation policies and international trade.

In 2022, Prof. Panezi was included in the EU's list of candidates suitable for appointment as arbitrator and as trade and sustainable development expert in FTA panel proceedings and she is a member of the Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA) panel and appellate panel roster for New Brunswick.
