DIRECTOR: PHOTINI PAZARTZIS

Professor of International Law

Photini Pazartzis is Professor of Public International Law at the Law Faculty of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens and Director of the Athens Public International Law Center (AthensPIL). She held the Constantine G. Karamanlis Chair in Hellenic and European Studies at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University (January 2023-January 2025) and is an affiliate at the Center for International Law and Governance of the Fletcher School.

She was a member of the UN Human Rights Committee, the supervisory body of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (2015-2022), serving as its Vice-Chair (2019-2021) and Chair (2021-2022).

She has been Visiting Fellow at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law and Wolfson College (University of Cambridge) and has lectured at numerous universities and academic institutions, including the Universities of Paris-I Panthéon-Sorbonne, Paris-II Panthéon-Assas, Oxford University, the European University Institute (Florence), the Xiamen Academy of International Law (Xiamen, China), the Hague Academy of International Law, the Singapore Academy of International Law, the European Institute of Public Administration (Maastricht), the Center for International Law (Brasil) and the Institut international des droits de l’homme (Fondation René Cassin.

Professor Pazartzis was a member of the Board of the European Society of International Law and served as President of the Society (2019-2021).  She was President of the Hellenic Branch of the International Law Association and Co-Chair of the ILA Study Group on The Content and Evolution of the Rules of Interpretation (2015-2020, with Professor Geir Ulfstein). She is a member of the Board of the Circle of Hellenic Academics in Boston (as of January 2025).

She is author of several books and numerous articles on international law. She is on the Editorial Board of the Polish Yearbook of International Law and the Evrigenis Yearbook of International & European Law, and has previously been on the Editorial Board of the European Journal of International Law (in her capacity as President of ESIL).

Professor Pazartzis is a member of the Hellenic Council of Foreign Policy at the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She has served as adviser for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; member of the Greek delegation to the UN Sixth Committee; she was a member of the OSCE Court of Conciliation and Arbitration and has recently been appointed as expert for the Moscow Mechanism of the OSCE (2022-2025).

She is a graduate of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens and holds a PhD (Doctorat d’Etat) from the University of Paris-II Pantheon-Sorbonne. Her PhD thesis received the Paul Guggenheim Prize.
