THE SOUTH CHINA SEA ARBITRATION: CONCLUSIONS AND EFFECTS

On 7 October 2016 Athens PIL organized a panel of academics and practitioners to discuss the recent award of the arbitral tribunal instituted by the Philippines against China under the dispute settlement procedures of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The panel comprised Professor Photini Pazartzis, Associate Professor Petros Liacouras (University of Piraeus), Assistant Professor Maria Gavouneli, Dr. Efthymios Papastavridis and Dr. Maria Telalian (Head, Special Legal Service, Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Professor Emeritus Emmanuel Roucounas moderated the discussion.

The panel discussed all aspects of the award, including the juris- diction of the tribunal, the legal status of maritime features, the environmental issues, as well as the issues concerning the EEZ and the continental shelf.
