2017: MIGRATORY FLOWS IN THE EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN: THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE

The Athens PIL is pleased to announce the first edition of our Summer School dedicated to ‘Migratory flows in the Eastern Mediterranean: The present and the future’ to be held at the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens on 19-23 June 2017.

The Athens PIL Summer School offers an intensive interdisciplinary 5-day course (33 teaching hours), which includes seminars, targeted tutorials and simulation exercises as well as a written examination at the end. It constitutes one of the main components of the Jean Monnet Module: “Migration Flows: Challenges and Perspectives under International and EU Law”, co-funded by the ERASMUS + programme.

The course aims to serve as a strong grounding in the legal treatment of refugees and migrants and the management of migratory flows under international and EU law. We will address the causes of the current wave of migratory flows in the area; review the current reception arrangements, including on-site visits to hotspots and first-reception camps around Athens; critically discuss the existing integration schemes; and debate the future of EU policies on the matter.

The lectures will be delivered in English, by leading academic experts and practitioners in refugee and migration law. The course targets mature postgraduate students and early-stage researchers but also practicing lawyers, policy-makers, NGO workers, international agency staff and other professionals working with refugees and migrants.

The number of participants is limited to 25 participants from EU and non-EU countries, so as their active involvement and constructive discussion within the course be ensured. Participants will be assigned readings in advance and they will receive a complete folder with all relevant documents and further readings upon arrival. A certificate of attendance will be given to all participants. Those who so wish may also sit an examination for the Athens PIL Summer Course Diploma.

Further information on the Summer School’s programme, the tuition fees and the application procedure is now available.
