Dr. Panos Merkouris, Assistant Professor of Public International Law at the University of Groningen and Fellow of the Athens Public International Law Center – Athens PIL of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens has been awarded the prestigious European Research Council – ERC Starting Grant for a project entitled: The Rules of Interpretation of Customary International Law (TRICI-Law). The project will run for 5 years and has a budget of €1.5 million, allowing the Principal Investigator to form a team of doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers to work on the subject.
The ERC Starting Grant is awarded to talented early scientists (2-7 years after completion of their PhD), who have already produced excellent work and show potential to be a research leader. It is awarded after a highly competitive process, comprising both a written proposal and an interview (see here). This is the first time that a Greek international law scholar has received such a grant.
Athens PIL is particularly pleased for the excellent news regarding our Fellow and congratulates Dr. Merkouris on his success.
