THE TEAM REPRESENTING THE NATIONAL AND KAPODISTRIAN UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS LAW SCHOOL WON FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR THE 2023 ALL-EUROPEAN INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN AND REFUGEE LAW MOOT COURT COMPETITION!

Our team participated in the All-European International Humanitarian and Refugee Law Moot Court Competition for the second time and, following a tight and exciting final round against the Ivane Javakhsivhili Tbilisi State University, was declared the winning team for a second time in a row!

The NKUA team was composed of the undergraduate students: Semina Athinelli, Angelos Bozios and Iro Sala under the supervision of the visiting researcher Dr. Stavros Evdokimos Pantazopoulos. Iro was also granted the award of Best Oralist of the Final Round.

The team members demonstrated their exceptional legal, public speaking, and role-playing skills throughout the various stages of this demanding Competition which they well-deservedly won.

The All-European International Humanitarian and Refugee Law Moot Court Competition is based on a Case Study which is carefully prepared by the organisers (University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Law) in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and addresses the most topical questions relating to international humanitarian and refugee law, drawing on current situations. It is designed to encourage students to study and understand the fundamental concepts of international humanitarian and refugee law by addressing concrete legal problems and practice their legal argumentation in front of experienced judges and panel members.

The 8th edition of the prestigious All-European International Humanitarian and Refugee Law Moot Court Competition took place at the exceptional premises of the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana from the 21st until the 24th of November 2023. It was organized by Professor Vasilka Sancin and Assistant Professor Maruša Veber (Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana) in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Slovenian Red Cross.

The hospitality and the excellent organization of the Competition ensure the NKUA’s return next year. The NKUA team is very grateful to Professor Vasilka Sancin and Assistant Professor Maruša Veber for putting together such a fascinating Competition.

The NKUA team would further like to acknowledge and warmly thank the ICRC Delegation in Paris and the Kyriakides Georgopoulos Law Firm for their indispensable contribution to our team’s success. Our kind words of gratitude also go to Bernitsas Law Firm for its constant care. Without their unwavering efforts, it would have been impossible for our team to participate in the Competition.

Our deep appreciation goes to the academic staff of the Department of International Studies, Law School, NKUA that has strongly encouraged our team’s participation for the second time, and to the administrative staff of the Law School, NKUA that helped us immensely throughout our preparation.
