9.2.2026 - The Criminalization of Journalism and Dissent: How are courts being used to silence journalists and criminalize dissent around the world?

📢 Join us on Monday, 9 February 2026 from 16:30 to 17:30 in the “Alkis Argyriades” Amphitheatre (Panepistimiou 30) for an open session organised by the Human Rights Institute, Columbia Law School, the Clooney Foundation for Justice and the Columbia Global Center Athens, in collaboration with the Athens Public International Law Center (Athens PIL), School of Law, National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, hosting the inaugural TrialWatch Clinical Network Forum in Athens, Greece.
📍 We invite students and members of the academic community to engage with one of the most pressing challenges facing democracies today: the criminalization of journalism and dissent through the misuse of legal systems.
🌍 Around the world, courts are increasingly used as tools of repression, targeting journalists, human rights defenders, and political opponents. This session explores how legal advocacy, trial monitoring, and international engagement can push back against these trends, drawing on experiences from multiple regions and real cases monitored globally.
Panel Facilitation: Professor Maria Gavouneli
Panel Participation: Professor Photini Pazartzis, Tejal Jesrani, Stephen Townley, Billie Blanco
